Best Things They Threw Away
We Are The Best Things They Threw Away
I am newer in spirit than these ragged clothes
I am more complete than my broken home
I am not fractured in character like your heroes are
I am in a braver world than you might decide
From the timid smile I dwell behind
And we are the best things They threw away
And we are the next ones To save the day
We are always exceptions to the rules
Tell that little child Next it could be you
You are the best thing, They threw away
The best thing They threw away
-Saw you in that busted telescope
Out in your own little Atmosphere
Orbiting all the moments you hold Dear
Out of reach of everyone you’ve come to Fear
You are the best thing, They threw away
The best thing They threw away
-My friend you are worth more than you know
Maybe you've been pinned down by their heavy words and sold
Maybe tonite is time to check the scars
In any given moment you may spread your wings and fly
That's why I always say a sweet goodbye
And we are the best things They threw away
And we are the next ones To save the day
We are always exceptions to the rules
Tell that little child Next it could be you
You are the best thing, They threw away
The best thing They threw away
“Best Things” is quite simply, the story of us. The pages of History are full of “the best things they threw away”. Nearly every true musician who was more than just another entertainer, every true artist who was more than just another painter, every true leader who was more than just a politician, every true warrior who was more than just another soldier, every true writer who was more than just a commercial novelist, was rejected by those in a position to see the fire within them, from King David to Winston Churchill to William Wallace to Pablo Picasso and Edgar Allen Poe. We are those that the world never saw coming even if it was looking for us. We were born for such a time as this, to serve this generation and bring something to it that only we can deliver because we were designed for that very purpose. If the gift is not received, this does not imply that the giver (Our Creator) made a mistake, or that the messenger (Ourselves) wasn’t qualified for the assignment, but it does mean that many do not have “Eyes to See” the Calling that has been placed on your Life and sometimes the Creator Himself has blinded their eyes because your time has not yet come and you are not yet ready to face these giants in your generation. This book is for “The Best Things They Threw Away”.
“And I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’
Revelation 2:17
“The Best Things They Threw Away” is not only your story, it is also my story, it is the soundtrack of both our lives. Your life has its own details, as does mine, but saying that both of us have never really “belonged” at any place or time for long would be an understatement. We have spent out whole lives waiting on a place at the table, and sometimes it has come along for a brief moment or for a day or for a few weeks, but the red carpet of belonging has never remained unrolled for us.
We know that there is so much inside us we would love to give, we have gifts that heal, gifts that draw out the colors from the gray, the beautiful moments from the ugliness of the world, music from the noise, mercy from the hard hearts, but these gifts remain unopened and often tossed aside just like the package of skin and bone they were wrapped in (ourselves). After many years of the gift and the package both being “returned to sender”, whether that be the ever religious “Jesus loves you” (just not us) or “You’ll find someone one day” (someone with lesser dreams), or “Good Luck in your future careers endeavors” (you don’t have the piece of paper that tells us every single facet or your potential), you start to see yourself not as the Van Gogh you thought on the museum wall but as the toddler’s scribble on the refrigerator, kept around as an act of mercy or duty or just guilt.
By the world’s measure of a success I am not much, as of the day I write this article I am in fact a 35 year old man, working part time at Lowe’s pushing carts for a living while driving a car I am two payments behind on while perpetually praying that I don’t run out of gas on the way to work that day. My credit score is beyond terrible, I rent a basement apartment instead of owning a home, and I have been on one date in the past 12 months. Aside from graduating college my academic records include failing first grade, failing eleventh grade, being listed as having slight mental retardation by my elementary school (which was later removed) and five years in Special Education for Math all before finally dropping out of high school because I had to work two dead end jobs just to buy groceries.
After watching my own father spend my Elementary School lunch money on a quart of beer so he could feed his addiction instead of his sons, after nights and nights sitting by phones that don’t ring, post office boxes that are as empty as a tombs, graduations with none of “my people” in the fold-out chairs, after two Divorce Certificates and other forms of denial letters (denying dreams from cars to white picket fences to smiling brides), I can honestly say that I know what it is to be “The Best Things They Threw Away”. I know both your gift and your pain and I am here to remind you that you are the BEST THINGS they never should have thrown away. There is a world full of hurting people waiting on your Gift, waiting on YOU. Please don’t be afraid to give the gifts inside again today because they tossed you away yesterday. You’re a Starry Night, and the truth of that is so loud it can’t be been muted by those who have simply gone Color Blind to who you are.

Prayer for Best Things They Threw Away
Lover of our Souls, Our Souls being Who We Are
We ask You to change the Price Tags
Others Lowered all the way Down and placed on our Hearts
We ask You to bring your Hammer and Nails
For their words have blown us Around
We ask You to Paste our Wings
Cause these Years went and pulled our Feathers Out
We ask You to gather the Pieces
Cause we found they wouldn’t fit with anyone anywhere
So we sent them Sailing South
We ask You to bring the Best Things They Threw Away
We ask You to bring the Best Pieces of Ourselves back Around
“As for the kedoshim who are in the land, they are noble—in them is all my delight.”
Psalm 16:3
